Retina anatomy Flashcards
Fovea
Point of central focus, spike of cones centred here.
Shaped like a cup, highest density of photoreceptors. color vision and sharpest vision at this point
Macula
Hihly sensitive area in center of the retina, back of the eye. Responsible for central vision
Light has to pass mass of retinal artiries and veins, and cell layers, body particals to get to the receptors
Pigment epithelium
The photoreceptors lie within the pigment that absorbs light, which prevents light scatter. This allows for sharper vision.
Cats have reflective epithelium, allowing them to see in the dark, yet unsharp
Blind spot
Where the optic nerve leaves the eye (RGC ribers) through the optic disk. No receptors, although filled up/not noticable.
