Primary visual pathway Flashcards

1
Q

Striate cortex

A

Primary visual pathway aka V1 AKA area 17. In the Occipital lobe, just under the parieto-occipital sulcus.

Very easy to recognise due to the striate that runs through it

Q

Retino-cortical expansion

A

Much more of the visual cortex is dedicated to the macula, the center of your vision.

The peripheral claims a much smaller part

We found this out due to war, where ‘new’ bullets created a lesion io destroying the whole brain. They saw certain lesions only affected certain parts.

Q

Visual area

A

Each visual area contains a seperate, retinotopic map of the visual field. Meaning what you see is reflected directly on that area. Every visual area has similar projections. So V1 has a map, V2 etc etc.

Doesn’t have to be a complete map,

Q

Segregation

A

The LGN projects to the V1, and the layers project to different parts of the cortex.

The Magno projects to layer 4C a in the striate cortex, while the parvo projects to 4C b

The info remains separate, the Magno sends more info to the Parietal cortex, while the Parvo sends most to the temporal cortex

Q

Layer 4

A

Biggest layer, strongest seperation in this layer.

Weaker in layer 2/3 and 5/6.

In layer 4, you can clearly see the Ocular Dominance columns when doing a DOG labeling task. You see the black and white, sending from each eye
