Respiratory System Easily Forgotten Information Flashcards
What are alveolar ducts?
Tubes consisting of side-by-side alveoli which give rise to alveolar sacs
What are alveolar sacs?
Dead ends consisting of nothing but alveoli
What is Boyle’s Law?
Pressure and volume have an inverse relationship
What is lung compliance?
A measure of the ease at which our lungs can stretch
What is pulmonary ventilation?
The physical movement of air into and out of the lung
What is a pneumothorax?
Pneumothorax occurs when air leaks from inside of the lung to the space between the lung and the chest wall.
The lung then collapses.
List the accessory muscles used in breathing at rest.
4
Sternocleidomastoid
Serratus anterior
Pectoralis minor
Scalene muscles
List the accessory muscles used in active exhalation.
3
Internal intercostal
Transversus thoracis
Abdominal muscles - rectus abdominus
What is partial pressure?
2
The pressure contributed by each gas in the atmosphere
All partial pressures together add up to 760 mm Hg
What is Henry’s Law?
3
When gas under pressure comes in contact with liquid
Gas dissolved in liquid until equilibrium is reached
At a given temperature amount of a gas in solution is proportional to partial pressure of that gas
What is gas content?
The actual amount of a gas in solution (at given
partial pressure and temperature) depends on the solubility of that gas in that particular liquid
What is a concentration gradient?
Gas moves down a concentration gradient from high partial pressure to low partial pressure
What two molecules help gas exchange?
Haemoglobin
Macromolecules
Under what conditions will deoxygenated haemoglobin of venous blood become oxyhaemoglobin of arterial blood?
(3)
Lower temperature, higher pH, increased oxygen pressure in capillaries of lungs
Under what conditions will oxyhaemoglobin become deoxyhaemoglobin?
(3)
Higher temperature, lower pH and lower oxygen pressure in the tissues
