Cardiovascular System Easily Forgotten Information Flashcards
Three types of blood vessels.
Capillaries
Arteries
Veins
Three types of capillaires.
Continuous
Fenestrated
Sinusoidal
Three types of arteries
Elastic arteries
Muscular arteries
Arterioles
Define the windkessel effect.
A rhythmic fluid ejection from the heart is transformed into a fairly uniform flow in the arteries with reduced pressure oscillations (reduced pulse strength)
What are the three tunica of all blood vessels walls?
Tunica interna
Tunica media
Tunica externa
What are the two extra tunica found in arteries?
External elastic lamina
Internal elastic lamina
What is the tunica interna?
Endothelium
What is the tunica media?
Layers of smooth muscle cells with sheet of elastic connective tissue
What is the tunica externa (adventitia)?
Layer of connective tissue with many collagen and elastic fibres
What is atherosclerosis?
Plaques of fat in vessel wall between intima and medial tunica
What are the three types of veins?
Large veins
Medium-sized veins
Venules
What are venules?
2
Very small veins
Collect blood from capillaries
What are medium-sized veins?
2
Thin tunica media and few smooth muscle fibres
Tunica externa with longitudinal bundles of elastic fibres
What are large veins?
3
Collect blood from capillaries
in tissues and organs
Return blood to heart
Store blood for emergencies
What are venous valves?
2
Folds of tunica intima
Prevent blood from flowing backward
