Renin Angiotensin System Flashcards
What activates the renin-angiotensin sytem?
When the glomerular filtration rate is disturbed
What causes a decreased GFR?
2
Drop in blood pressure
Drop in blood flow to the kidney
What is the function of the renin angiotensin system?
Restores blood flow to the kidney and restores filtration
What are the two end results of the renin angiotensin system?
Raise in blood pressure
Increase in fluid volume and therefore blood flow
What is the first step in the renin angiotensin system?
Decreased glomerular filtration rate
What is the second step in the renin angiotensin system?
Juxtaglomerular apparatus increased production of renin
What increases the production of renin?
Juxtaglomerular apparatus
What is the third step in the renin angiotensin system?
Formation of angiotensin I
What is the fourth step in the renin angiotensin system?
Activation of angiotensin II
What five things does angiotensin II do?
8
Constricts glomerular efferent arteioles
Increased vasoconstriction
Adrenal glands increase aldosterone secretion
There is an increased retention of Na+
The CNS:
- increases stimulation of thirst centers
- increases ADH production
- increases sympathetic motor tone
What does the increased aldosterone secretion by the adrenal glands do?
It increases the retention of Na+
What does the stimulation of thirst centers do?
Increases fluid consumption
What does the increased production of ADH do?
It increases fluid retention
What does increased sympathetic motor tone do?
3
Constriction of venous reservoirs
Increases cardiac output
Increases vasoconstriction
What does the constriction of venous reservoirs, increased fluid retention and consumption and retention of Na+ do?
It increases blood volume
