Respiratory Physio Questions Flashcards
How are Type I and Type II alveolar cells different?
Alveolar Type I cells: site of gas exchange
Alveolar Type II cells: Produce surfactants that are secreted onto the inner surface of alveoli
inhaled anesthetics work through aveolar type I cells
How is surfactant from Type II alveolar cells useful?
reduces water surface tension and supports inflation of lungs
What is the PNS and SNS effect on lungs?
PNS effect:
Bronchoconstriction mediated by muscarinic (3?) cholinergic receptors
SNS (and epinephrine) effect:
Bronchodilation mediated by beta2 adrenergic receptors
How are mucus glands and bronchial glands different?
Mucus glands: Produce and secrete mucus into airways
Bronchial glands: Secrete H20 to keep airways moist and mucus moving & not too viscous
