Respiration And Exercise Flashcards
Energy is …. Not ….
Released
Produced
Aerobic respiration
A process in which energy is released from food (glucose)
What is the word equation for aerobic respiration
Glucose + oxygen –> carbon dioxide + water + energy
What is the balanced symbol equation for aerobic respiration
C(6)H(12)O(6) + 6O(2) –> 6CO(2) + 6H(2)O + energy
Describe respiration in cells
Respiration occurs in the mitochondria which have enzymes
Effects of exercise on the body
- breathing rate increases
- depth of breath increases (as more oxygen for respiration to make glucose to function muscles)
- heart rate increases
- feeling hotter (same energy converted to heat)
Describe some changes that occur after exercising regularly
- amount of blood pumped out of the heart during each beat (cm[3]) increases
- heart volume increases
- breathing rate (number of breaths per min) decreases
- pulse rate (beats per min) decreases
Anaerobic respiration
- in the absence of O2 respiration can still happen
- this is called anaerobic respiration (without oxygen)
Word equation for anaerobic respiration
Glucose –> lactic acid + energy
Which type of respiration is more efficient
Aerobic respiration is 16x more efficient
Balanced symbol equation for anaerobic respiration
C(6)H(12)O(6) –> 2C(3)H(6)O(3) + energy
Oxygen debt
The additional oxygen that must be taken into the body after vigorous exercise for the body to ‘respire’ the lactic acid made in anaerobic respiration
The word equation for breaking down lactic acid
Lactic acid + oxygen –> carbon dioxide + water
The balanced symbol equation for breaking down lactic acid
C(3)H(6)O(3) + 3O(2) –> 3CO(2) + 3H(2)O
Word equation for yeast aerobic respiration
Glucose + oxygen –> carbon dioxide + water
