Renal Physiology IV Flashcards
What are electrolytes?
Minerals in your body that have an electric charge
What are the 3 different compartments of physiological fluid within the body?
Intracellular, interstitial and plasma
What are some features of intracellular fluid?
Permeable to water but impermeable to ions unless theres a pump, and surrounded by a plasma membrane
What is interstitial fluid?
Fluid that surrounds/ bathes the tissue cells of multicellular animals
What are cations?
Positively charged ions
What are anions?
Negatively charged ions
What charge do non-electrolytes have?
they have no charge
e.g urea, glucose and amino acids
What is an increase in water volume known as?
oedema
What is a decrease in water volume known as?
dehydration
What can cause electrolyte levels to fluctuate?
Drugs vomiting, Diarrohaea
What is plasma fluid?
The main component of blood (part of the ECF)
Where does the ICF lie and what does it make up?
It lies within cells and is the principal component of the cytoplasm, it makes up around 60% of the bodies total water content
What accounts for the other 40% of the total body water?
ECF
What are the three components of ECF?
20% is plasma
75% is interstitial fluid
5% is transcellular fluid
tcf- cerebrospinal fluid, synovial fluid, pleural fluid etc
