Fertile female II Flashcards
What is dioestrus characterised by?
A functional corpus luteum and high progesterone
What is proestrus characterised by?
a significant increase in oestradiol
What is oestrus characterised by?
High oestradiol and sexual receptivity
What is metoestrus characterised by?
Follicular remodleling to form a corpus luteum
What is anoestrus?
When the cycling stops
How many waves of FSH do you get in a horse?
two waves
What is the basic pattern for a follicle?
recruitment phase, selection phase (only the best follicle is ovulated) then domiance phase (single follicle takes over)
Why might a stud farm mate a horse twice within the period of oestrus?
They have a long oestrus period 4-8 days
What is ‘being in heat’ referred to in the horse?
being hot or cold towards the stallion
What is the cervix like during diestrus?
Cervix is tightly closed
What is the cervix like during estrus?
Swollen/ softened cervix
What does progesterone stop?
It doesnt stop recruitment of follicles but it does stop ovulation
What are the ‘waves’ in mares?
Many follicles developing over time but none ovulating due to lack of LH surge so atresia occurs
Why is the oestrus cycle different in cows?
in terms of follicles
They have waves/ many follciles being recruited developed etc.
What part of the oestrus cycle does luteolyis occur in?
proestrus
What parts of recruitment and selection are FSH dependent?
growth and selection
What parts of the follicle selection/ovulation are dependent on LH?
Dominance/ becoming a dominant pre-ovulatory follicle
What does the prolonged oestrus in teh bitch mean?
superfecundation, large litters can be sired by multiple dogs
Which animal has no defined metoestrus phase?
dogs
Which animal has no mechanism to break down the corpus luteum and therefore no mechanism to begin cycling again?
Dogs
why wont cats have progesterone if they are not mated
they are induced ovulators so unless they are mated there will be no corpus luteum
what helps to suppress oestrus in the queen
lactation
