- ventrolateral surface of the brain
- nerves innervate the periphery emerging from the brain
olfactory nerve
CN I - function: smell (sensory)
optic nerve
CN II - function: vision (sensory)
oculomotor nerve
CN III - function: controls four of the six extra-ocular eye muscle, change diameter of pupil (motor)
trochlear nerve
CN IV - function: controls superior oblique muscles (smallest of the cranial nerves) (motor)
- helps move eye down
trigeminal nerve
CN V - (mixed)
- ophthalmic branch
- maxillary branch
- mandibular branch
ophthalmic branch
(sensory) - sensations from forehead, eyelids and nose
maxillary branch
(sensory) - sensations from lower eyelid, upper lip and cheek
mandibular branch
(mixed) - controls mastication, sensations of temples, gums and teeth of mandible, salivary gland of portions of tongue
abducens nerve
CN VI - function: controls lateral eye movements (motor)
facial nerve
CN VII - function: sensations from the face (sensory), controls muscles of the face (motor)
vestibulocochlear nerve
CN VIII - (sensory)
- vestibular branch - balance and equilibrium
- cochlear branch - hearing
glossopharyngeal nerve
CN IX - function: tongue pain and taste (sensory), swallowing (motor)
vagus nerve
CN X - function: information from organs (sensory), sends information to the organs (motor)
accessory nerve
CN XI - functions: controls sternocleidomastoid (shrug shoulders) and trapezius, also goes to some swallowing muscles
