Quiz 9 - CNS: last bit of brain Flashcards
protection of the brain
brain is protected by bone, meninges and cerebrospinal fluid and the blood-brain barrier
mengiees
3 connective tissue membranes external to the CNS to cover and protect the CNS
- dura mater
- arachnoid
- pia mater
dura mater
“tough mother”; composed of 2 fibrous connective tissue layers
arachnoid
“spider”; beneath is subarachnoid space filled with CSF and large blood vessels - will protrude superiorly and allow CSF to be absorbed into venous blood
pia mater
“gentle mother”; delicate connective tissue that clings tightly to the brain
ventricles and cerebrospinal fluid
cavities of the brain filled with CSF contain choroid plexuses that produce CSF
ventricles
lateral - paired c-shaped
third - in diencephalon
forth - dorsal to pons
CSF
completely surrounds the exposed surfaces of the central nervous system
what does CSF do
- prevents contact between delicate neural surfaces
- support brain: forms a lipid cushion to give buoyancy to the CNS organs
- transport nutrients, chemical messengers and waste products
choroid plexus
produces CSF - also removes waste from CSF and fine-tunes its composition
