BMI formula
Weight (kg) ÷ height (m2)
OR
Weight (lb) ÷ height (in2) x 703
Normal capillary refill
Full color returns in less than 2 seconds
Abnormal capillary refill time indicates
Capillary blood flow is compromised (i.e. arterial occlusion, hypovolemic shock, hypothermia)
Cardinal symptom of PAD
Claudication
What is claudication?
Occurs when skeletal muscle oxygen demand during exercise exceeds blood oxygen supply.
Results from stimulation of local sensory receptors by accumulating lactate or other metabolites.
Testing for claudication
Pt walks on a flat track at max speed or on a treadmill at 2.0 mph at a constant grade between 0-12%
Claudication: location of pain
Corresponds with site of most proximal stenosis
Claudication: pain in buttock, hip, or thigh occurs with obstruction of these arteries
Aorta
Iliac
Claudication: calf pain occurs with stenosis of
Femoral and popliteal arteries
