Explain divisions of empirical self
**Material self **- All material things you regard as mine including – tangible objects. People and places
**Social self **- How we feel we’re regarded and recognised by others (social identities)

What does this determine?

If a person acts different in each context they have no real genuine self
What is the sociological appraoch to self?
- Self emerges in and is reflective of society
- Can’t understand self without clear understanding of society
- Development of ‘self concept’
Define - self concept
Dynamic collection of self representation formed through personal experience and interpretation of the environment – Ellis-Hill 2010
- This changes due to experience of different relationships with bodies, families and wider society
Define self-identity
Taylor – defining where I speak from, in the family tree, in social space, in geography of social statuses and functions, in intimate relations to the ones I love and also crucially in the space of moral and spiritual orientation
- What we do in practice also related as there relational working together
What is habitus?
– Pierre Bourdieu
- to act in a particular way as we know without knowing the right thing
- social class shapes out habitus (see what is ‘normal’)
Whats a pre-reflexive aspect of identity?
- habitus
- Naturally identities without thinking about it
- Physical capital, social capital and cultural capital play a role
Describe interdependence of inequalities
- Class based inequalities
- Gender inequalities – childcare, occupation, pay conditions
- Ethnicity – minorities geographical concentrations
What are identities in sick role?
- Not expected to fulfil normal social obligations
- Not held responsible for their illness
- Should want to get well
- Should seek and accept medical help
What are causes of loss of self?
- Illness and disability disrupting one’s life trajectory
- Take assumptions and behaviours for granted
- Self image, body practices, social identities and valued roles
- Required mobilisation if resources to face changed situations
Explain the legitimacy of illness and stigma?
- Discrimination due to perceived inferiority
- Shame
- Encouraged to conceal condition – present as normal (hidden distress model)
- Social norms for dominant norms and values due to existing power relation, dominations and discrimination
- Need to justify to self and others
Explain inequalities and individual responsibility
- Those living with socioeconomic disadvantage have good understanding of link between socioeconomic hardship and ill-health
What is athletic identity?
- More a person identifies with being an athlete more difficult it is to deal with athletic injuries
- So more depressive reaction after injury
