What are the 3 ways in which dissonance is resolved?
- Change behaviour
- Acquire new information
- Reduce importance of the cognitions/beliefs
What is social loafing
Tendency for people to expend less individual effort when working in a group than when working alone
4 factors that increase the likelihood of social loafing to occur
- Person believes individual performance won’t be monitored
- Goal/task of group has less meaning/value to person
- Person has generally low motivation/strive for success
- Person expects that other members of the group will display high effort
Social loafing depends on gender and culture. How so
Gender = all male groups, social loafing is more common
Culture - social loafing more common in individualistic cultures (i.e. western cultures)
4 factors which cause social loafing to reduce/disappear
- Individual performance monitored
- Members highly value task/goal
- Smaller groups
- Members of similar competence
Detecting health problems - use negative talk (if you don’t Get a breast exam, you are more likely to die from cancer)
Promoting prevention behaviours - use positive talk (using sunscreen = healthier skin and prolong life)
