Diagnostics 4 - Histopathology and Cytopathology lab Flashcards
Differentiate histopathologists and cytopathologists
Histopathologists (tissue structure) - Biopsies, resection specimens, frozen sections, post mortems
Cytopathologists = smears and fine needle aspirates
What are frozen sections fixed in?
Formalin - crosslinks proteins and slows decomposition
Then embedded in paraffin wax
What stain is used for frozen sections
H + E (haematoxylin and eosin), ZN stain (for TB)
When is cytopathology used?
Cytopathology is very quick
When looking at individual cells and not tissues
used for fine needle aspirations
used for cervical screening
Which disease is the HIV/AIDS defining diease
Kaposis sarcoma - may be shown on a skin biopsy
CD31 immunocytochemistry may show?
Vascular tumour infiltrating collagen bundles - endothelial cell tumour
CD31 marks vascular endothelium
