Protists 13 Bio Flashcards
Protists
Eukaryotic organisms in domain Eukarya
Have nucleus and other membrane bound organelle
Unicelled and multicelled organisms but most are unicellular. Include photoautotrophs and heterotrophs.
Euglena
Unicellular. Live in fresh waster and move by flagella. If deprived of light it loses its chloroplasts and becomes a heterotroph.
Dinoglafellates
Unicellular. Most are photosynthetic and single celled. Marine plankton, can be red, brown, yellow, green.
Diatoms
Unicellular algae with glass like appearance consisting of SiO2.
Algae
Can be uni, colonial, or multicellular.
Gold,, brown, green, red.
Amoeba
Unicellular, moves by pseudopodia (false feet). Fresh water. Feeds on bacteria, algae, and some protozoans.
Plasmodium
Unicellular. Causes Malaria. This is type of sporazoan.
Heterozygotes for sickle cell are at an selective advantage. The sickle cell has a shorter life span and prevents plasmodium from completing its life cycle.
Paramecium
Contractile vacuoles expel water.
Micro and macro nucleus. Ciliates, using cilia for swimming. Built for speed.
Slime molds
Unicellular, predatory, eat bacteria.
Endosymbionts
Mitochondria and chloroplasts might have been smaller prokaryotes living in larger cells. Both have their own DNA. They resemble bacteria.
Plastids
Include chloroplasts and chromoplasts.
DNA similar to bacteria
Both divide by pinching in the half, both have their own cell membranes.
Hydra are not protists
They are small aquatic animals, multicellular.
