Heterosexual relationships
Marriage is the only valid place for heterosexual relationships because it is God’s plan from humans, but you cannot have sex before marriage
Homosexual relationships
- some Christians oppose homosexuality because the bible says that ‘men who have sex with men’ will not be entered into the kingdom of God
- the catholic church teaches that homosexuals aren’t sinful but should remain chaste ( no sex)
- the CofE welcomes homosexuals living in committed relationships but does not accept marriage in the church
Sex before marriage
-for many Christians, sex expresses deep, lifelong union that requires the commitment of marriage
- liberal Christians before that it is valid if the couple are intending to get married
Sex outside of marriage (adultery)
Adultery breaks the vows that christian couples make before God and threatens the stable relationship needed for their children’s security
Contraception (Catholic and Orthodox)
-artificial contraception goes agains the natural law/ purpose of marriage and cam encourage selfishness
- the purpose of sex is to have children
Contraception (Anglican and non-conformist)
- people should only have the amount of children they can care for
- ## allow contraception to enable couples to develop relationships
The purpose of marriage
- Marriage is a gift from God
- It is a sacrament blessed by God that reflects the sacrificial love of Jesus
- it is a spiritual bond of trust that reflects the love of Christ for the Church
Divorce and remarriage
- christian clergies offer councelling but don’t allow divorce
- jesus taught that anyone who divorced and remarried was committing adultery
- vows made in God’s presence must be kept
- Christians must go through with an annulment to be able to remarry
- in some cases divorce is the ‘lesser of two evils’
Nature of families
-In biblical times, people lived with their extended families
- christians must ‘love each other’
- the commandment ‘ honour your father and mother’ is important especially when parents are elderly
Children in families
-parents and children have responsibilities to each other, children have duties to obey, love and respect their parents
- children are gifts from God and parents should respect their dignity
- Christian parents are expected to be good role models
