Biology- Cell Division Flashcards
What is the cell cycle called
Mitosis
What are the 4 stages of cell division (4 marks)
1) parent cell with 2 pairs of chromosomes are replicated
2) the chromosomes line up along the centre of the cell, divide and move to the opposite poles
3) the nucleus divides
4) each identical ‘daughter’ cell contains the same genes of the parent cell
Why is mitosis important
-growth and development of multicellular organisms
- repairing damaged tissues
- asexual reproduction
What are stem cells
Undifferentiated cells that can divide to make different types of cells
Where are they found
-human embryos
-bone marrow
-some tissues and organs
How can you use stem cells
-therapeutic cloning
-treating disease (diabetes and paralysis)
-replace damaged cells
