Biology- The Heart Flashcards
1
Q
How does the heart pump blood around the body
A
Using a double circulatory system
2
Q
What are the four chambers in the heart
A
-left and right atria
- left and right ventricles
3
Q
What do the Atrias do
A
Recieve blood from the veins
4
Q
What do the ventricles do
A
Pump blood into the arteries
5
Q
How does heart pump blood (6 marks)
A
- Blood enters through the atria
- They contract and force blood into the ventricles
- The ventricles contract and force blood out of the heart
- Valves make sure the blood flows in the right direction
- The heart rate is controlled by a group of cells in the right atrium called the pacemakers
6
Q
What are arteries for
A
. They transport blood from your heart to your organs
. They have thick walls made of muscle and elastic fibres
7
Q
What are valves for
A
- they transport blood from your organs to your heart
- they have thinner walls with valves to stop the backflow
8
Q
What are capillaries for
A
-They allow substances needed by the cells to pass out of the blood
-they allow substances produced by the cells to pass into the blood
- narrow and thin-walled blood vessels
