Chemistry- Rate Of Reaction Flashcards
How can the rate of reaction be found
- measuring the amount of reactants used
- mesuring the amount of products formed
- measuring the time it takes for a reaction mixture to become opaque or change colour
What is the activation energy
The minimum energy required to cause a reaction
What factors affect the rate of reaction (4 marks)
Temperature
- rate of reaction increases because of an increased collision rate
Concentration
- rate of reaction increases because of crowded particles causing increased collision rate
Pressure
- rate of reaction increases for the same reason as concentration
Surface area
- increased rate of reaction due to increased collision rate
Required practical- how concentration effects rate of reaction
1) set up conical flask on top of paper with a black cross on it
2) add hydrochloric acid
3) add sodium thiosulphate and stir
4) start a timer immediately
5) when the cross is no longer visible stop the timer and record
6) repeat with different concentrations of hydrochloric acid
