Chemistry- Strong And Weak Acids Flashcards
What does it mean by ‘acids can ionise in a solution’
Splitting up to produce a hydrogen and another ion eg: chlorine
What is a strong acid
Strong acids ionise completely in water,
What pH are strong acids (usually)
pH0-2
What are 3 examples of Strong acids (3 marks)
Sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid, nitric acid
What is a weak acid
An acid that doesn’t completely ionise in a solution
What pH are weak acids (usually)
2-6
What are 3 examples of weak acids (3 marks)
Ethanoic acid, citric acid, carbonic acid
What is the difference between concentration and strength
Strength tells us what proportion of the acid molecules ionise in water. Whereas Concentration measures how much acid there is in 1dm^3 of water
