Biology- Enzymes Flashcards
What are enzymes
They are biological catalysts that speed up chemical reactions in living organisms
What are enzymes main properties (4 marks)
-they are all large protiens
- there is a space within the protein molecule called the active site
- each enzyme catalyses for a specific reason
-they work best at a specific temperature or pH called the optimum
What is the lock and key theory
It is a model used to explain how enzymes work: the chemical that reacts is called the substrate (key) and it fits inside the enzymes active site (lock)
What is denaturing
It is when the enzymes active site changes shape due to extreme temperatures or pH
Is denaturing permanent or semi-permanent
Semi-permanent
Where are digestive enzymes produced
In a gland in the lining of the gut
What are digestive enzymes called
-Protease
-lipase
-carbohydrase
