Biology- Blood Flashcards
What is blood
A tissue made of a liquid called plasma
What is in plasma
- red blood cells
-white blood cells - platelets
What does plasma do
Transports various chemical substances around the body such as the products of digestion, hormones, antibodies, urea and carbon dioxide
What are the main factors of red blood cells
-they contain haemoglobin
- they do not have a nucleus
-they are very small
- shaped like biconcave discs providing a large surface area for oxygen to quickly diffuse through
What is haemoglobin
A substance that binds with oxygen to transport it from the lungs to the tissues and cells, where it is needed for respiration
What are the main factors of white blood cells
- they are essential to protect the body against infection
- they can change shape, squeezing out of the blood vessels, into the tissues
-they engulf microorganisms and pathogens
What are platelets
They are fragments of dead cells, that collect at wounds and trigger blood clotting
