Practical 2 Flashcards
What are 5 of the 6 radula types found in gastropods and their radula tooth formula?
Taenioglossate: 0-2-1-2-0
Rhipidoglossate: ∞-6-1-6-∞
Rachiglossate: 0-1-1-1-0
Toxoglossate: 0-1-0-1-0
Docoglossate: 4-2-1-2-4
The three types of radula teeth?
Rachidian
Lateral
Marginal
What are Rachidian radula teeth?
A single, unpaired median tooth
What are lateral radual teeth?
Those adjacent to the rachidian on each side
What are marginal radula teeth?
The outermost series
How does herbivore radula differ from carnivore radula?
Herbivore radula: contain lots of small teeth, used for scraping plant matter from rocks
Carnivores radula: have less teeth but are larger which can be used for drilling
What is Aristotle’s lantern and which organism uses it?
Sea urchins.
Feeding tool of sea urchins
How does Aristotle’s lantern retract and protract?
Five pairs of if retractor muscles draw the lantern up into the test.
Five pairs of protractors push the lantern down.
How does water pass through a sea urchin?
A ciliated siphon connects the oesophagus to the intestine, enables water to bypass the stomach
What are the characteristics of a herbivore’s gut?
A herbivores gut is generally complex and long
Characteristics of a carnivore’s gut?
Simple and short
What kind of radula pattern is this? What is its formula?
∞-6-1-6-∞ Rhipidoglossate
What is the type and fromula of this radula?
Docoglossate 4-2-1-2-4
What type and formula radula is this?
Taenioglossate 0-2-1-2-0
What type and formula does this radula have?
Rachiglossate 0-1-1-1-0
