Lecture 18- Size and scaling Flashcards
Allometry
Differential growth of body parts that results in a change of shape or proportion with size.
Allo = other than
Metron = measure
Isometry
A transformation that does not change the size or shape of a figure.
Iso= same
same as metric
LSD and elephants
People gave too much LSD to elephant as they scaled up the amount of LSD for a cat
Cat’s and elephants have different metabolic rates.
It didn’t end well
Uses of allometry
Used to estimate the food requirements of the great cormorant
Pressure and gravity
Pressure only depends on the height of fluid in a column.
Volume has not effect on pressure
Pressure overcoming gravity example
Elephants heart is further away from it’s brain than a mice heart.
Therefore in order to that blood to reach the elephants brain must be more pressure.
Blood pressure pattern in animals
Blood pressure increases as distance between heart and it’s head
Does size matter?
Mass influences a great many physiological, ecological and life-history variables
