Procedure for adults
Prep:
- Given consent forms. Briefed (study about memory). Told to pay attention. Instructed. Filler and probing questions. Records responses on matching sheet.
Procedure for children
Prep
-Parents given consent forms. 3 female experimenters went into the children’s school (smart-casual clothes). Briefed. Could withdraw consent at any time and wouldn’t be in trouble. Did some craft activities
Experimental
Children tested individually. Asked to pay attention, filler questions, instructions, responses recorded.
Aims
- To investigate whether correct identifications and false positive responses are more influenced by social rather than cognitive abilities.
Why were the photos on black and white?
The bright colours of the cartoon character would become the focus of recognition rather than the character’s identity
Why did the 3 female experimenters wear professional causal clothing (blouse, sweater, dress pants)?
Avoid influencing the children’s responses through social pressure by the suggestion of authority.
