Cognitive Apprroach Flashcards
Name 1 Assumptions of the Cognitive approach
Our senses receive info, which is processed by the brain and it is this processing that directs how we behave.
Name a 2nd assumption of the Cognitive Approach
It is impossible to observe internal mental processes directly but we can infer what a person is thinking based on their actions.
Name a 3rd Assumption of the Cognitive Approach
There are similarities between the way computes and individuals process info.
Name a 4th assumption of the Cognitive Approach
There are individual difference between cognitive processes which explain differences in emotions and behaviour.
Describe the cognitive process of memory
We encode (convert) sensory info so that it can be stored. Storage is the brains record of the event. To be used, that info must be retrieved through recognition or recall.
What are schemas?
Mental frameworks
(Of beliefs/expectations)
Developed from experience
Why are schemas beneficial?
They help organise and interpret incoming info in our environment quickly to prevent us from being overwhelmed by this info.
How can schemas be limiting?
Schemas can distort info as we may select and interpret environmental stimuli using irrelevant schemas.
