Popliteal fossa Flashcards
Borders of popliteal fossa
Superior medial: Semimebranosous
Inferior medial: Medial head of Gastrocnemius
Inferior lateral: Lateral head of Gastrocnemius
Superior lateral: Biceps femoris
Floor and Roof of political fossa
Floor: Posterior surface of knee joint (popliteal surface of femur)
Roof: Popliteal fascia and skin
Shape of fossa
Diamond
Where is popliteal fossa?
Space behind knee joint
Contents of popliteal fossa medial to lateral:
- Popliteal artery
- Popliteal vein
- Tibial nerve
- Common fibular nerve (common peroneal nerve)
All villans thieve fish
List the contents of the popliteal fossa from superficial to deep
Nerves (common fibular and tibial)
Then Veins
Artery = deepest
NeVA
What are the tibial nerve and common fibular nerves branches of?
Where does the fibular nerve go?
- The sciatic nerve
- Common fibular nerve follows biceps femoris tendon, travelling along the lateral margin of popliteal fossa
How does the popliteal vein come about?
The short saphenous vein pierces the popliteal fascia and passes between the two heads of gastrocnemius to empty into the popliteal vein.
How do these vessels enter popliteal fossa?
Through adductor hiatus - gap in 2 components (adductor and hamstring portions) of the adductor magnus muscle
