Muscles of the hand Flashcards
2 sections
Thenar eminence
Hypothenar eminence
(flexor, abductor, oppenens on each)
Thenar muscles
Flexor pollucis brevis
Abductor pollucis brevis
Oppenens pollicis (deep)
Thenar nerve supply
Median nerve
Hypothenar muscles
Flexor digiti minimi brevis
Abductor digiti minimi
Oppenens digiti minimi
Interossei muscles
Palmar interossei
Dorsal interossei
Interossei rule
PADS - palmars adduct
DABS - dorsal abduct
(4 on the door, 3 on the palm)
(away from middle finger)
Other hand muscle
Adductor pollucis (sits across) Ulnar nerve
Hypothenar nerve supply
Ulnar nerve
Lumbricles function
Flex fingers at metacarphalangeal joint
extend at interphalangeal joint
(claw hand)
lumbricles O and I
O: flexor digitorum profundus tendons
I: extensor expansion
Lumbricles structure
index and middle: unipennate
ring and litte: bipennate
Nerve supply lumbricles
index and middle (1 and 2) - median nerve
ring and little (3 and 4) - ulnar nerve
Insertions dorsal interossei
Abducts soo…
1st and 2nd (near thumb) insert onto radial side proximal phalynx and extensor expansion
3rd and 4th insert onto ulnar side
insertions palmar interossei
Adducts so..
1st ulnar side
2nd 3rd - radial side
Structor of extensor digitorum
Each tendon splits to a central slip (inserts onto base of middle phalanx)
2 lateral slips - insert onto base to distal phalanx
Artery supply to hand
Radial and ulnar artery via deep and superficial palmar arches
What does superficial palmar arch do?
common palmar arteries - supply fingers
contributed to most by the ulnar artery
Deep palmar arch
From radial artery mostly
Blood supply to thumb and radial side of index finger
Major nerve supply intrinsic hand muscles
Mostly ulnar apart from LOAF
LOAF is median nerve
Lumbricles - radial side
Opponens pollucis
Abductor pollicis brevis
Flexor pollicis brevis
Testing nerve sensation
Radial: dorsum first webspace
Median: palmar tip of index
Ulnar: ulnar border hand
Snuff box contents
Radial artery
superficial radial nerve
cephalic vein
Sensory nerve hand
Radial is a lot of dorsum (apart from medial 1 1/2 fingers)
Median is palm until medial 1 1/2 fingers
Ulnar nerve - medial 1/2 fingers all surface
whats eye of the hand
median nerve - feel what something is when you cannot see it
