Anterior thigh Flashcards
Muscles of anterior thigh
Iliacus Rectus femoris Vastus lateralis Vastus intermedius Vastus medialis Sartorius Pectineus
Most functions of anterior thigh muscles
Extend knee
flex hip
Sartorius
Origin: Anterior superior iliac spine
Inserts: pes anserinus (medial tibia)
Function: UNUSUAL knee flexor, hip: flexor, lateral rotator, weak abductor
Innervation: Femoral nerve `
Common innervation of anterior muscles:
Femoral nerve
Pectineus
Origin: pectineal line on anterior pelvis (pubis)
Insert: pectinal line of femur (inferior to lesser trochanter)
Function: Hip flexor, adductor
Innervation: femoral nerve with some obturator
Iliacus
Origin: Iliac fossa
Insert: lesser trochanter
Function: flexor of thigh at hip
Innervation: femoral nerve
Quadricep femoris muscles
4 rectus femoris vastus medialis vastus intermedius vastus lateralis Extend leg at knee
Vastus Lateralis
Origin: Greater trochanter
Insertion: patella via quadriceps tendon then to tibial tuberosity (patellar ligament)
Action: Extends knee, stabilises patella
Innervation: femoral nerve
Vastus medialis specific function
pulls patella medially to stop it dislocating laterally
stops lateral dislocation of patellofemoral joint
Rectus femoris
Origin: Anterior inferior iliac spine
Insert: Patella (via quadriceps tendon)
Function: flex thigh at hip, extend knee
Innervation; femoral nerve
ONLY QUAD MUSCLE TO CROSS HIP AND KNEE
Vastus Intermedius
Origin: Anterior and lateral femoral shaft
Insertion: patella (via quadriceps ligament)
Action: Extend the knee joint, stabilise patella
Innervation: femoral nerve
Vastus Medialis
Origin: Intertrochanteric line. Linea aspera
Insertion: patella (via quadriceps tendon)
Actions: Extend the knee joint and stabilise patella
Innervation: Femoral nerve
Iliopsoas
Psoas major and iliacus
Psoas major
Origin: lumbar vertebrae
Insert: Lesser trochanter
Action: Flexes thigh at hip
Innervation: Anterior rami (L1-3)
