Cubital Fossa Flashcards
Borders cubital fossa
Superior: Line between lateral and medial epicondyles of humerus
Lateral: Brachioradialis
Medial: Pronator teres
Floor and roof cubital fossa
Floor - brachialis and supinator muscle
Roof - Bicep brachii aponeurosis, skin and superficial fascia
Contents cubital fossa (lateral to medial)
TAN
Tendon of Biceps Brachii
Brachial artery
Median nerve
(radial nerve sometimes considered)
What runs superficially to cubital fossa usually involved in venepuncture?
Median cubital vein (usually used for blood tests etc)
Why is cubital fossa important?
Blood pressure
Peripheral pulse
Superficial veins
Vasculature upper limb arteries
Subclavian –> axillary (at lateral border 1st rib)
Axillary –> Brachial (inferior border teres major)
Gives off profunda brachii (radial groove)
Brachial –> radial and ulnar artery
Radial side border vein (lateral)
Cephalic vein
faces ceiling when thumbs up
Ulnar side border vein (medial)
Basilic vein
faces base when thumbs up
Where do cephalic and basilic vein originate?
Dorsal venous network (drains into cephalic and basilic)
Cephalic vein course
Lateral wrist Anterolateral arm Deltopectoral groove Pierce DEEP fascia Joins axillary vein (deep)
Basilic vein course
Ulnar side
Half way up arm pierces deep fascia
Brachial vein
Axillary vein
Communication between cephalic and basilic vein
Median cubital vein
(runs obliquely above cubital fossa)
