Q

why did Hitler and the Nazis want to pursue a pact with Poland very early on?

A

they wanted to secure peace to allow Germany to re-arm and prepare for war at the turn of the decade

by forming the non-aggression pact wit Poland in 1934, Poland could not join the USSR and thus a war against Germany so early was unlikely

Q

why was Hitler’s offer to Poland to join the anti-Comintern pact significant?

A

Hitler can be seen to be testing the loyalty of Poland

16
Q

what treaties strengthened Germany’s position over Poland?

A

the Pact of Steel
the Nazi-Soviet Pact

17
Q

why was the Pact of Steel significant?

A

he now had Mussolini’s military support

18
Q

why was the Nazi-Soviet Pact significant?

A

meant that Germany would not be opposed by the USSR if it invaded Poland which gave both sides time to prepare for an inevitable Nazi-Soviet war in the near future

ALSO
a secret clause was put in the pact which stated that Poland would be split between both countries once invaded

19
Q

what was Hitler’s view on the promise of support from Britain and France for Polish independence?

A

he believed it was false

they didnt act with Czechoslovakia so why would they act with Poland

neither nations were undergoing major rearmament or conscription which suggested neither nations were preparing for a war with Germany

20
Q

why had Britain and France changed from their policies of appeasement going into 1939?

A

the increased brutality towards Jews in Germany with Kristallnacht and Anschluss serving as examples changed the allied feeling of appeasement for Germany

21
Q

why would the invasion of Poland be seen as a move to world war?

A

Hitler was testing the supposed bluff of British and French support

Hitler was also reinforcing his position in Europe for a potential Western war with the support of the USSR and the Red Army

appeasement had given Eastern powers time to rearm and Hitler saw this as the perfect moment to strike

22
Q

why can Hitler’s invasion of Poland be seen as a miscalculation?

A

he underestimated the level of support that France and Britain would provide

he trusted military intelligence of military unpreparedness in the Western powers
