PNS And Sensory Organs Flashcards
CN I: name classification and function?
Olfactory nerve I: provides sensory function of smell.
CN II: name classification and function
Optic nerve II: provides the sensory function of vision
What are the two other structure associated with the optic nerve?
Optic chiasm (the middle x-shaped portion of the optic nerve) and the optic tract (the part of the optic nerve the proceeds posteriorly from the optic chiasm into the thalamus)
CN III: name, classification, and function?
Oculomotor nerve III. Motor nerve. Controls ciliary muscle, pupil constrictor, and extrinsic eyes muscles except superior oblique and lateral rectus.
Where does CN III travel and what is its classification and function?
Travels through superior orbital fissure. Motor nerve. Enervates the movement of most of the eye muscles except superior oblique and lateral rectus.
CN IV: name, classification, and function
Trochlear nerve IV. Motor. Enervates superior oblique muscle. Passes through superior orbital fissure.
CN V: name, classification, and function
Trigeminal nerve V. Sensory AND motor. Three divisions: ophthalmic division, maxillary division, mandibular divisions. Enervates muscles of mastication, provides sense to face, teeth, and gums.
What are the three divisions of the trigeminal nerve and what is each of their functions?
Ophthalmic division: V1 transmitted through superior orbital fissure, enervates forehead and scalp region
Maxillary division: V2 transmitted through the foremen rotundum to the upper jaw region providing proprioception and nociception.
Mandibular division: V3 transmitted through foremen ovale. Mixed nerve to lower jaw region. Motor to mastication.
CN VI: name, classification, and function
Abducens nerve VI. Motor. Enervates lateral rectus. Transmitted through superior orbital fissure
CN VII: name, classification, and function
Facial nerve VII. Both sensory AND motor. Sensory function = taste for anterior 2/3 of tongue. Motor function is to enervate facial muscles, secretion of saliva, and tears.
CN VIII: name, classification, and function
Vestibulocochlear nerve VIII. Sensory. Involved in equilibrium and hearing. Transmitted through internal auditory meatus.
CN IX: name, classification, and function.
Glossopharyngeal nerve IX. Both sensory AND motor. Gives sensory function of taste to posterior third of the tongue. Motor function enervates swallowing and secretion of saliva. Transmitted through jugular foramen.
CN X: name, classification, and function.
Vagus nerve X. Both sensory AND motor. Motor function enervates muscles for swallowing and muscles of respiratory tract, heart, esophagus, and abdominal viscera. Sensory, forms 70% of parasympathetic division of autonomic nervous system.
CN XI: name, classification, and function.
Accessory nerve XI. Motor. Enervates sternocleidomastoid, trapezius, and other muscles that move head, neck, and shoulders. Transmitted through jugular foramen.
CN XII: name, function, and classification
Hypoglossal nerve XII. Motor. Innervates muscles of the tongue.
