7 Articulations Flashcards
What do you call a joint that has no ability for movement?
Synarthrotic
What is an example of a synarthrotic joint?
Skull sutures
What do you call a joint that’s slightly movable?
Amphiarthrotic.
What is an example of an amphiarthrotic joint?
Radial-ulnar joint
What do you call a freely movable joint?
Diarthrotic
What is an example of a diarthrotic joint?
Shoulder joint
What are the three types of joints?
Fibrous, cartilaginous, synovial
What are the three types of fibrous joints?
Gomphoses, sutures, and syndesmoses
What are the two types of cartilaginous joints?
Synchondroses, symphyses
What are the characteristics of a gomphosis and where are they found?
They are synarthrotic, peg-in-socket joint found only in the articulation of tooth with alveolus.
What are the characteristics of sutures and where are they found?
A minimum amount of fibrous tissue between interlaced bone. Found only in skull.
What are the characteristics of syndesmoses and what two places are they found?
Amphiarthrotic. Bone connected to bone only by ligaments. Found in radioulnar joint and tibiofibular joint.
What are synchrondroses and where are they found?
Synarthrotic joints where hyaline cartilage unites bone. Example, epihyseal plates, rib-manubrial joint, and costochondral joint.
What is a symphysis and were is it found?
Amphiarthrotic joint where fibrocartilage connects bones. Example, pubic symphysis and intervertebral discs.
What are synovial joints?
Diarthrotic joint lubricated by fluid filled cavity.
