Pituitary Disorders Flashcards
1
Q
Posterior pituitary problems mostly relate to what?
A
Adenomas
2
Q
What causes hyper function of the anterior pituitary?
A
Adenomas
Hyperactivity of target gland
3
Q
What is syndrome of inappropriate ADH (SIADH)?
A
Hypersecretion of ADH
4
Q
What is the etiology of SIADH?
A
An ectopic tumor secreting ADH-like substance
5
Q
What occurs in SIADH and why? (2)
A
- Increased ADH leads to increased water retention, sodium follows. Since water is in excess to sodium it’s called DILUTED HYPONATREMIA
- increased blood vol suppresses renin secretion & RAAS leading to less aldosterone and impaired sodium resorption
6
Q
What is the treatment for mild SIADH?
A
Fluid restriction Diuretics ADH antagonists (aquaretics-block ADH receptors)
7
Q
Which pituitary has the most problems associated with it?
A
Anterior pituitary
