Pilot Boards Vessel
-Pilot given information on ships speed, heading, engine setting and draught.
-Completed pilot card handed over
-Pilot made aware of LSA
-Passage discussed and agreed on with both parties
-Hotel Flag raised
During Pilotage
-Bridge team aware of responsibilities
-Progress of ship monitored
-Engine room and crew updated on progress
Prior to berthing
Berthing or Anchoring agreements made
Prior to Pilot Boarding
OOW 1 hour to pilot station:
-Advise master of ETA
-comms with pilot and advise ETA
-continuous position + UKC monitoring and look out maintained.
-bridge team established changing from auto to manual steering
-position extra lookouts
-log entries made throughout
-engines placed on standby in ample time and astern propulsion tested
-radar reduced to 6 mile range on approach, lookout for traffic!
Pilot Ladder Requirements
-Handhold stanchions
-Man ropes
-Spreader
-Height above waterline
-Responsible officer
-Life buoy with self igniting light
-AT NIGHT ships deck lit by fwd shining light.
Duties of the OOW with regard to Pilot
–Pilot’s presence doesn’t relieve Master or OOW of:
-duties for the ship’s safety.
–Master and Pilot shall exchange information:
-navigation procedures,
-local conditions
-ship’s characteristics.
–Master +/ OOW co-operate:
-closely with pilot
-maintain checking ship’s position and movement.
–If in doubt, seek clarification from the pilot.
-if doubt still exists, notify Master
immediately and take whatever action is necessary before the Master arrives.
