MARPOL Flashcards
What is MARPOL
International Convention for the prevention of pollution of the marine environment by ships from operational or accidental causes.
The annexes to MARPOL are:
Oh No Here She Goes Again
- Oil
- Noxious Liquids
- Harmful Substances in packaged form.
- Sewage
- Garbage
- Air
Precautions to be taken to prevent pollution of the marine environment as required by MARPOL Conventions
Oil - Oil filtering equipment, OPP cert, Oil Record Book, SOPEP manual
Sewage - sewage treatment plant, ISPP Cert,
Garbage - Placard, Garbage Management plan + Garbage Record book
Air - SECAs, EIAPP cert, SEEMP + IEE Cert
Whats a Special Area? give examples
Relating to its oceanographical and ecological condition and to sea traffic, the adoption of special mandatory methods for the prevention of sea pollution is required.
note: different sea areas for different regulations.
- Baltic Sea
- Black Sea
- Red Sea
- North Sea
- Mediterranean Sea
- Antartica
- Gulf of Aden
What can you throw over the side (Annex 5)
°Food waste comminuted or ground: Special Areas->12nm and enroute
Non Special Areas->3nm and enroute
°Food waste NOT comminuted or ground: Special Areas-prohibited!
Non Special Areas->12nm and enroute
°Cleaning Agents+non harmful Additives in deck wash water: Special and Non Special Areas-permitted
SOPEP Manual
- Carriage requirement?
- Purpose?
- Oil tankers of 150 GT and above and
- all ships of 400 GT and above
: carry an approved Shipboard Oil Pollution Emergency Plan (SOPEP)
Purpose : to provide guidance to Master and officers onboard with steps to be taken when an oil pollution incident has occurred or is likely to occur.
Garbage Management Plan
who needs it?
what is it?
requirement applies to all ships -100GT and above or carrying 15 or more persons
designated person in charge of carrying out the plan
sets of procedures for minimising, collecting, storing, processing and disposing of garbage.
Anti Pollution equipment
Oil filtering equipment,
Sewage Treatment plant
Garbage Management plan
SOPEP Kit:
Oil Booms + Pads
Can you pump oil over the side?
ONLY in an emergency.
Annex I Regulations for the Prevention of Pollution by Oil
Covers prevention of pollution by oil from operational measures as well as from accidental discharges
Annex IV Regulations for the Prevention of Pollution by Sewage from Ships
Contains requirements to control pollution of the sea by sewage;
The discharge of sewage into the sea is prohibited, except:
-when the ship has in operation an approved sewage treatment plant
- when the ship is discharging comminuted and disinfected sewage using an approved system at a distance of more than three nautical miles from the nearest land;
-sewage which is not comminuted or disinfected has to be discharged at a distance of more than 12 nautical miles from the nearest land.
Annex V Regulations for the Prevention of Pollution by Garbage from Ships
Deals with different types of garbage and specifies the distances from land and the manner in which they may be disposed of; the most important feature of the Annex is the complete ban imposed on the disposal into the sea of all forms of plastics.
Annex VI Regulations for the Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships
Sets limits on sulphur oxide and nitrogen oxide emissions from ship exhausts and prohibits deliberate emissions of ozone depleting substances; designated emission control areas set more stringent standards for SOx, NOx and particulate matter. A chapter adopted in 2011 covers mandatory technical and operational energy efficiency measures aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions from ships.
