- Gather as much information as possible
- Consider MAYDAY RELAY
- Proceed to casualty at best speed
- Establish comms with CRS and other vessels proceeding to distress
- Prepare for assist (+ rescue boat)

GMDSS, what is it?
Who does it apply to?
The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) is an
internationally agreed upon
- set of procedures,
- types of equipment,
- communication protocols
used to increase safety and
make it easier to rescue
distressed ships, boats and aircrafts.
Subject to commercial vessels over 300 GT.
NAVTEX, what is it?

Sea Area A1
Area A1 is an area within coverage of at least one VHF coast station in which continuous DSC alerting is available, i.e. approx. 20-30 miles, or line-of-sight, from coasts.
Sea Area A2
Area A2 excludes Area A1 but is within coverage of a shore-based MF coast station, i.e. approx. 100 miles.
Sea Area A3
Area A3 excludes Areas A1 and A2 but is within coverage of an INMARSAT geostationary satellite in which continuous alerting is available.
Sea Area A4
Area A4 excludes Areas A1, A2 and A3 but covers the remaining sea areas of the world, i.e. mainly the Polar regions.

- PORTABLE VHFs for use in survival craft
(x2 if < 500 GT, x 3 if > 500 GT.) - NAVTEX receiver (518 kHz)
- Inmarsat EGC receiver, if the ship is engaged on voyages in Sea Area A3.
