Photosynthesis Flashcards
What happens in photosynthesis?
Light energy is converted into chemical energy. The energy is stored in the chemical bonds of glucose.
Where does photosynthesis take place?
Chloroplasts and they are found mainly in the middle layers of cells in a leaf.
Where does the Light dependent reaction reaction take place?
Grana
Where does the light independent reaction take place?
Storms
What is photosynthesis responsive to?
Certain wavelengths of iwht energy, from red to violet. These are the wavelengths of light that are absorbed most strongly by plant pigments, particularly the dominant green pigment in photosynthesis, chlorophyll.
Can the light dependent reaction take place in the dark?
No only when light is present
What is the purpose of the light dependent reaction?
Provide energy (ATP) for the light independent reaction
What does the light reaction require?
Water and sunlight
What is chlorophyll used for in the light dependent reaction?
It is used to catch the sunlight and energize electrons. These electrons split water but. They also remove phosphates from the chlorophyll and add them to ADP to form ATP.
What happens to the ATP in the light dependent reaction?
Passed on to the light independent reaction
What are water molecules split by in light dependent reaction?
High energy electrons from sung light into hydrogen and oxygen.
What is the byproduct of the light dependent reaction?
Oxygen
What happens to the hydrogen in the light dependent reaction?
Is picked up by a molecule called NADP to form NADPH.
What are the reactants and products of the light dependent reaction?
Reactants: ADP, NADP, H2O
Products: ATP, NADPH, O2
Does the light independent reaction need sunlight?
No
