24.2 Flashcards
Heterotrophic saprophyte?
Heterotrophic bacteria that feed on dead and decaying material.
Photoautotroph? Example.
Bacteria that use sunlight as an energy source. Ex. Cyanobacteria. These use light-trapping compounds to obtain energy, similar to plants.
Obligate anaerobes? Example. What does this bacteria cause?
They cannot survive in the presence of oxygen. The obligate anaerobe, Clostridium tetani causes tenanus.
Facultative anaerobes? Example.
Can live with or without oxygen. Esherichia cole (common in uman digestive tract) is an example.
Obligateaerobes? Example. Where does it live?
Bacteria that cannot survive without oxygen. Ex. Mycobacterium tuberculosis lives in the lungs and causes tuberculosis.
Thermophilic?
These bacteria grow best in temperatures between 40 degrees celcius to 110 degrees celcius. pH is perfered at 6.0 or lower (for certain species, like those used to produce yogurt).
