Phospholipids Flashcards
What are phospholipids?
Phospholipids are the structural basis of all cell membranes and perform roles in cellular functions such as insulin signaling.
What are the components of phosphatides?
Phosphatides contain glycerol, two long-chain fatty acids, a phosphate group, and either inositol, choline, or serine.
What is phosphatidylcholine?
Phosphatidylcholine is the predominant phospholipid in the body.
What is lecithin?
Lecithin is synthesized by the liver, plays a role in fat digestion, emulsification, and helps improve cognitive function by increasing cholesterol solubility.
What is the therapeutic use of inositol?
Inositol improves insulin sensitivity and can be used in cases of insulin resistance, such as Type 2 diabetes and PCOS.
What is the therapeutic use of phosphatidylserine?
Phosphatidylserine improves neuronal membrane function and cognitive function, and can be used in cases of depression, insomnia, and stress.
What is the therapeutic use of phosphatidylcholine?
Phosphatidylcholine is neuro- and hepato-protective, supports the synthesis of acetylcholine, and is important for cognition, memory, immunity, and hormone function.
