Pharynx Flashcards
Between what 2 levels does the pharynx run?
Base of the skull to the level of C6
What are the 3 regions of the pharynx?
- Nasopharynx
- Oropharynx
- Laryngopharynx
What opens into the nasopharynx?
Posterior apertures (choanae) of nasal cavity
What opens into the oropharynx?
Posterior opening of the oral cavity (oropharyngeal isthmus)
What opens into the laryngopharynx?
Superior aperture of the larynx (laryngeal inlet)
What 2 things form the pharyngeal wall?
- Skeletal muscles
2. Fascia
What are 2 groups of muscle which are found in the pharynx?
- Constrictor muscles
2. Longitudinal muscles
What is the major difference between constrictor and longitudinal muscles of the pharynx?
Constrictor muscles have fibres orientated in a circular direction whereas longitudinal muscle fibres are orientated vertically
Give 3 examples of constrictor muscles
- Superior constrictor
- Middle constrictor
- Inferior constrictor
What is the posterior insertion of the 3 constrictor muscles?
Pharyngeal raphe
What are the 3 origins of the superior constrictor muscle?
- Pterygoid hamulus
- Pterygomandibular raphe
- Adjacent bone of the mandible
What is the pterygoid hamulus?
Tip of the medial pterygoid plate
What are the 2 origins of the middle constrictor muscle?
- Stylohyoid ligament
2. Lesser and greater horn of the hyoid
What are the 2 origins of the inferior constrictor muscle?
- Oblique line of the thyroid cartilage
2. Cricoid cartilage
What are the 3 longitudinal muscles of the pharynx?
- Stylopharyngeus
- Salpingopharyngeus
- Palatopharyngeus
What is the origin of the stylopharyngeus?
Styloid process of temporal bone
What is the origin of the salpingopharyngeus?
Cartilaginous part of the pharyngotympanic tube
What is the origin of the palatopharyngeus?
Soft palate
What is the location of the nasopharynx?
Lies above the soft palate and behind the nasal cavities
What is the pharyngeal isthmus?
Opening between naso and oropharynx
What are 5 things found on the lateral wall of the nasopharynx?
- Opening of auditory tube
- Elevated ridge
- Pharyngeal recess
- Salpingopharyngeal fold
- Pharyngeal tonsil
What is the enlargement of the pharyngeal tonsil called?
Adenoids
Where is the oropharynx located?
Posterior to oral cavity, inferior to level of soft palate and superior to upper margin of epiglottis
What 2 things form the floor of the oropharynx?
- Posterior 1/3 of the tongue
2. Interval between tongue and epiglottis
What is 3 things are found on the lateral wall of the oropharynx?
- Palatoglossal arches covering palatoglossal muscles
- Palatine tonsils
- Palatopharyngeal folds covering palatopharyngeus muscles
What 2 folds are found in the midline of the oropharynx?
- Median glossoepiglottic fold
2. Lateral glossoepiglottic fold
What is the depression on either side of the median glossoepiglottic fold called?
Valleculla
What is the arterial supply of the palatine tonsil?
Tonsillar branch of facial artery
Where is the laryngopharynx found?
Extends from superior margin of epiglottis to oesophagus at level of C6
Where does the laryngeal inlet open to?
Anterior wall of laryngopharynx
What is found between the central part of the larynx and lamina of thyroid cartilage?
Piriform fossae (mucosal recesses)
What is the function of piriform fossae?
Form channels which direct solids and liquids from oral cavity to oesophagus
What is the sensory nerve supply of the nasopharynx?
Maxillary branch of CN V
What is the sensory nerve supply of the oropharynx?
CN IX
What is the sensory nerve supply of the laryngopharynx?
Internal laryngeal branch of CN X
What is the motor supply of the larynx?
Pharyngeal plexus bar stylopharyngeus which is supplied by CN IX
What 3 cranial nerves form the pharyngeal plexus?
- CN IX
- CN X
- Cranial part of CN XI
Describe the flow of food once sit has been swallowed
- Oropharyngeal isthmus opened
- Palate is elevated
- Palatopharyngeal sphincter contracts
- Pharyngeal isthmus is closed and separation of nasopharynx from oropharynx
What is tonsillectomy?
Removal of the tonsils
What vein lies laterally to the palatine tonsils?
External palatine vein
What causes adenoids?
Excessive hypertrophy of lymphoid tissue, usually caused by infection
What can occur due to the close relationship of adenoids and auditory tube?
Recurrent otitis media
