Oral Cavity and Tongue Flashcards
What causes a tongue-tie?
Thickening of the lingual frenulum
What are the ridges found on the palate called?
Palatal rugae
What structure is formed by the end of the soft palate?
Uvula
What is the isthmus of the fauces?
Demarcation between oral cavity and pharynx
Name the 5 muscles of the soft palate
- Tensor palatini
- Levator palatini
- Palatoglossus
- Palatopharyngeus
- Musculus uvulae
What is the function of tensor palatini?
Tighten the soft palate
What is the function of levator palatini?
Elevate the soft palate
What is the motor supply of the soft palate?
Cranial part of accessory travelling with the vagus except tensor palatini which is supplied by mandibular nerve
What branch of CN IX is involved in the pharyngeal plexus?
Pharyngeal branch - Sensory
What 2 branches of CN X are involved in the pharyngeal plexus?
- Pharyngeal branch - Motor
2. Superior cervical ganglion
What branch of CN XI is involved in the pharyngeal plexus?
Cranial part
What is the sensory supply of the soft palate?
Maxillary and glossopharyngeal nerve
What is the arterial supply of the soft palate?
Ascending palatine branch of facial artery
What is found on either side of the frenulum on the inferior surface of the tongue?
Lingual vein
What is found lateral to the lingual vein on the inferior surface of the tongue?
Fimbriated fold
What is found on either side of the frenulum in the floor of the mouth?
Sublingual papilla
What is the significance of the sublingual papilla?
It is where the sublingual duct opens
Where does the submandibular gland open in the mouth?
Sublingual caruncle
What are intrinsic muscles of the tongue?
Muscles which lie within the substance of the tongue
What is the general function of intrinsic muscles of the tongue?
Change shape of the tongue
Give 3 specific ways the intrinsic muscles of the tongue work
- Shorten the tongue via longitudinal intrinsic muscles
- Narrow the tongue via transverse intrinsic muscles
- Flatten the tongue via vertical intrinsic muscles
What is the nerve supply of the intrinsic muscles of the tongue?
CN XII
What are extrinsic muscles of the tongue?
Muscles which lie external to substance of the tongue
What is the function of the extrinsic muscles of the tongue?
Changes the direction of the tongue
What is the nerve supply of the extrinsic muscles of the tongue?
CN XII except palatoglossus which is supplied by CN XI via CN X
What are the 3 possible arrangements of intrinsic muscle fibres?
- Longitudinal
- Transverse
- Vertical
What are the 4 extrinsic muscles of the tongue?
- Palatoglossus
- Hypoglossus
- Styloglossus
- Genioglossus
What is the origin of the genioglossus?
Superior mental tubercles on the posterior surface of mandibular symphysis
What is the insertion of the superior and middle fibres of the genioglossus?
Tongue
What is the insertion of the inferior fibres of the genioglossus?
Body of the hyoid
What is the nerve supply of the genioglossus?
Hypoglossal nerve
What is the action of the genioglossus?
Protrude the apex of the tongue through the mouth
What is the origin of the hyoglossus muscle?
Hyoid bone
What is the insertion of the hypoglossus muscle?
Blends with other muscles of the tongue
What is the nerve supply of the hypoglossus muscle?
Hypoglossal nerve
What is the function of the hypoglossus muscle?
Depress the tongue
What is the origin of the styloglossus muscle?
Styloid process of temporal bone
What is the insertion of the styloglossus?
Lateral aspect of the tongue
What is the nerve supply of the styloglossus?
Hypoglossal nerve
What is the action of the styloglossus muscle?
Draw tongue upwards and backwards
What is the origin of the palatoglossus?
Palatine aponeurosis
What is the insertion of the palatoglossus?
Side of the tongue
What is the nerve supply of the palatoglossus?
Accessory via the vagus
What are the 2 actions of the palatoglossus?
- Pulls roots of tongue upwards and backwards
2. Narrow oropharyngeal isthmus
What is the arterial supply of the tongue?
Lingual artery
Where does the lingual artery originate?
As a branch from the external carotid
Where does the lingual artery originate?
Adjacent to the tip of the greater horn of hyoid bone
What is the venous drainage of the tongue?
Lingual veins
Where do lingual veins drain to?
Internal jugular vein
What are the 4 lymph nodes which drain the tongue?
- Retropharyngeal
- Deep cervical
- Submental
- Submadibular
