What is the conjunctiva?
A mucous membrane that lines the eyelid and is reflected at superior and inferior fornices onto anterior surface of eyeballs
What forms the eyelids?
A fibrous sheet
How are the superior and inferior tarsal plates formed?
Orbital septum thickening at its margins
What attaches the lateral ends of the plates?
Lateral palpebral raphe
What attaches the medial ends of the plates?
Medial palpebral ligament
What is the major muscle within the upper eyelid?
Levator palpebrae superioris
What is the origin of the levator palpebrae superioris?
Apex of orbit
What is the 3 insertion points of the levator palpebrae superioris?
- Skin of the eyelid
- Tarsal plate
- Conjunctiva of superior fornix
What is the action of the levator palpebrae superioris?
Raises the upper eyelid
What is the nerve supply to the striated part of the levator palpebrae superioris?
Oculomotor nerve
What is the nerve supply to the smooth part of the levator palpebrae superioris?
Sympathetic fibres
Describe how the 4 recti muscles originate
As a group from a common tendinous ring at the apex of the orbit
Name the 4 recti muscles
- Superior rectus
- Medial rectus
- Lateral rectus
- Inferior rectus
Where do the 4 recti muscles insert?
Sclera
What is the origin of the superior oblique?
Junction of the roof and medial wall of the orbit
What is the insertion of the superior oblique?
Just behind equator of the eyeball
What is the origin of the inferior oblique?
Nasal side of the orbital wall
What is the insertion of the inferior oblique?
Lateral surface of the eyeball, deep to lateral rectus
What is the action of the medial rectus?
Moves eye inwards towards nose
What is the action of the lateral rectus?
Moves eye outwards away from nose
What is the action of the superior rectus?
Raises cornea upwards and medially
What is the action of the inferior rectus?
Depresses cornea downwards and medially
What is the action of the superior oblique?
Rotate eyeball so cornea looks down and laterally
What is the action of the inferior oblique?
Rotate eyeball so cornea looks upwards and laterally
