Patient safety Flashcards
What is the spaulding classification split into
critical
semi critical
non critical
What is the definition of critical
devices that enter tissue that is usually sterile or enters the vascular system - need instruments to be STERILE
What is the defition of semi critical
Instruments have contact with intact mucus membranes but does not penetrate sterile tissue - Want instruments to be STERILE preferably or use a high level disinfectant (however these have no role in general dental practice)
What is non critical defition
What is non critical defition
Instruments have contact with intact skin only - Want to clean or disinfect instruments
Why do we need sterile instruments
Reduces the probability of infection transmission
International standard for surgical instruments that we must adhere to
Legislative and professional standards
Maintaining high quality care for patients
What is the definition of sterile
For a terminally-sterilised medical device to be designated ‘sterile’, the theoretical probability of their being a viable microorganism present on/in the device should be equal or less than 1x10-6
What is the definition of sterilised
This would suggest that something is not sterile at the point of use. An instrument may have been subject to a sterilisation process but without proper handling and management may no longer be sterile at the point it will be used for a procedure
What are the critical steps for the decontamination cycle
Storage Use Transport Cleaning Disinfection Inspection Packaging Sterilisation Transport Storage
What is cleaning
Cleaning will remove any biological matter, bodily fluids, proteins (with specific relation to prion vCJD) or infectious substances, and also, reduce the amount of microbial presence
What is disinfection
Disinfection is the first part of the decontamination cycle where we are actively targeting microbial presence and reducing the amount on the surface of our instrument. It is carried out using heat
