DMS summary - luting agents Flashcards
What are dental cements used for luting
zinc phosphate cement
zinc polycarboxylate cement
GIC
What makes GIC used for luting different to GI used for restoration
Main difference between this cement and the filling material is the particle size is less to allow for better thickness
What is a disadvantage of GIC as a luting agent
Doesn’t bond to restorative materials, restoration should be sandblasted prior to allow for mechanical adhesion
What must temporary cements be
soft
for easy removal
How are temporary cements supplied
base and catalyst/accelerator
What does the base of temorary cements contain
Base contains zinc oxide, starch and mineral oils
What does the accelerator of temp cements contain
more dependant on manufacturer (some contain eugenol some don’t) but the most important part is carnauba wax which weakens the structure of cement to make it easier to remove
What can we add to make a temp cement weaker
petroleum jelly
What must eugenol containing cements not be used with
resin materials
What is the brand name of composite luting agents
NX3
What must composite luting agents be used with
suitable dentine bonding agent
How do you bond a resin inlay to tooth
tooth –> DBA –> comp luting agent –> add resin inlay
How does porcelain bond to tooth
treat with hydrofluoric acid first (porcelain)
requires a silane coupling agent
tooth –> DBA –> comp luting resin –> silane –> porcelain
How does non precious metal bond to tooth
Tooth → DBA → composite luting resin → metal bond agent → non precious metal
