Parotid Gland Flashcards
What are the 6 components of the parotid region?
1) parotid gland
2) parotid duct
3) Parotid plexus ( CN VII)
4) retromandibular vein
5) external carotid artery
6) masseter muscle
What does the parotid duct pierce as it travels to go to the oral cavity?
Buccinator muscle
What are the 2 innervations of the parotid glands?
1) Auriculotemporal N.
2) Great Auricular Nerve ( Cervical plexus C2- C3)
What innervates the angle of the mandible ?
C2-C3 ( Great auricular Nerve)
List the path of the innervation of the parasympathetic part Parotid Gland.
Parasympathetic component of CN IX supplies presynaptic fibers to the OTIC Ganglion»»»Postsynaptic from the Otic ganglion to the gland via auriculoteporal nerve.
What does the parasympathetic nerves do once it reach the parotid gland?
Acts on the acinar and ductal cells to secrete saliva and increase blood flow
List the path of the sympathetic part of the parotid gland. Where does it originate and where does it hitchhike a ride to the gland?
Originate from the cervical ganglia»» travel via carotid nerve plexus.
What are the superficial muscles of mastication?
1) Masseter muscle
2) temporalis muscle
( * remember they are both innervated by V3 mandibular nerve)
What are the deep muscle mastication?
lateral pterygoid
medial pterygoid
What is the visceral component of cranial nerve IX?
Lesser petrosal nerve
What are the 7 branches of the maxillary artery?
Middle meningeal inferior alveolar muscular branches anterior deep temporal posterior deep temporal buccal artery sphenopalatine
( Remember MIMA P B S)
What type of joint is the temporomandibular joint?
modified hinge type synovial joint
During the first 15 degrees of depression of the mandible where is the mandibular head?
mandibular fossa
Past the 15 degrees of mandibular depression where is the head of the mandible?
articular tubercle
What ligament prevents posterior dislocation of the temporomandibular joint?
Lateral Ligament
