Parkinsons Disease Flashcards
1
Q
Dopaminergic
A
Levodopa (L-dopa)
2
Q
Adverse effects for Levodopa (L-dopa)
A
dystonia and CNS Effects
3
Q
Administration for Levodopa (L-dopa)
A
- May combine w/ Carbidopa (Sinemet)
- Goal is the lowest dose; It is the most effective, but has serious adverse effects (dystonia), so start at lowest dose and if side effects occur, change to another med
- DON’T terminate abruptly
- Teach Pt, therapeutic effect occurs in 1-4 weeks
4
Q
Assessment Levodopa (L-dopa)
A
- Assess for CNS responses/characteristic of Parkinsonism
- Inspect oral cavity after drug administration in patient with dysphagia
- Monitor for safety with ambulation and ADLs (Environmental)
5
Q
Anticholinergic
A
Benzotropine (Cogentin)
6
Q
Used for Benzotropine (Cogentin)
A
- The oldest antiparkinson agents
- Most effective for tremor but less effective for bradykinesia
7
Q
MOA of Benzotropine (Cogentin)
A
- Reduce excess cholinergic effect associated with dopamine deficiency
- Restore neurotransmitter balance in striatum
8
Q
Miscellaneous
A
Amantadine (Symmetrel)
9
Q
Amantadine (Symmetrel) is used for
A
- Parkinson’s
- Prophylaxis for Flu
10
Q
Nursing Concerns
A
- Administer drug early to avoid insomnia
- Avoid driving or other tasks requiring alertness
- Avoid other OTC drugs
