  • widespread use has led to resistant strains
  • Patient’s need to drink 2 liters of fluid daily
  • Patients should avoid sunlight and wear sunscreen/protective clothing if necessary, to be in sun
  • Can reach high concentrations in the kidneys

  • Nephrotoxicity (renal failure)
  • -Check UA for urinary casts and proteinuria
  • -Check increased serum BUN and Creatinine
  • Ototoxicity
  • (8th cranial nerve damage) including auditory & vestibular damage
  • Dizziness (Vertigo)
  • Hearing loss
  • Tinnitus
  • -Monitor peak and trough levels due to narrow therapeutic window (toxic level close to effective level)

-Watch for hearing deficits
Take with food to avoid GI upset
-Possible recurrence of symptoms
-Start 2 wks before exposure & continue 8 wks after for prophylaxis
