Control Severe Diarrhea
MOA for Diphenoxylate with Atropine (Lomotil)
Act on smooth muscle cells of intestine to slow peristalsis
Bismuth Subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol) is for?
- Oral OTC for heartburn, Helicobacter infection and diarrhea
- PUD & GERD
MOA for Bismuth Subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol)
Turns to Salicylic Acid in stomach
Adverse effects for Bismuth Subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol)
- Caution for salicylate toxicity if using ASA
- Should not be used for children with flu symptom – Reye’s syndrome
Loperamide (Imodium)
Act on smooth muscle cells of intestine to slow peristalsis
Octreotide (Sandostatin)
Mimic somatostatin to prevent serotonin & other active peptides that promotes diarrhea
Also inhibit intestinal secretions and enhance absorption
Assessment for all antidiarreha agents
- Assess GI and function and bowel movements
- Determine frequency and consistency of BMs
Precautions for all antidiarreha agents
- Monitor for dehydration, especially in young children
- Avoid Alcohol and Caffeine
